Bogazici University (BOUN)
Bogazici University (BOUN) is the highest ranking, non-profit, public university of Turkey, founded in 1863. With more than 150 years of research and teaching tradition, the administrative and academic quality is recognized and approved by the European University Association (EUA). BU is the only Turkish University among the first 150 universities based on Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Additionally, BU ranked 5th in the Times Higher Education BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings. The official language of instruction is in English, and it maintains broad international educational exchange programs, with significant number of international students on campus. BU has over 600 faculty members and over 300 research staff and assistants. Among these, 70% of faculty members have received their Ph.D. degrees from internationally recognized prestigious academic institutions. The University offers PhD programs in 30, and MSc programs in 47 different fields. BOUN is affiliated with The Utrecht Network, The Mediterranean Universities Union (UNIMED), and The International Association of Universities (IAU). Main tenets of BOUN’s vision are increasing its competitiveness in academic research and being among the best research universities in the world. Around 1500 projects have been sponsored at the University by various funding resources such as EU Framework programs, European Molecular Biology Organization, American Philosophical Society, NIH, NSF and various multinational corporations, such as IBM, Siemens, Intel, SRC, Microsoft, SAP Germany. The success rate in the number and the estimated value of the awarded contracts has gradually increased since 2003, from the beginning of Turkey’s association with FP6. The University is also a partner in the EURAXESS network and a mobility center in the university, established to support foreign researchers in Turkey and to encourage Turkish researchers in the participation of the mobility programs of the EU, works in accordance with more than 200 other mobility centers currently established in the other member and associate countries of the EU. Boğaziçi University has a long history of cultural exchange. Since its establishment over 150 years ago, its international reach has begun right here on campus, where scholars and students of all backgrounds and from diverse countries have engaged with each other and with the rest of the world. Today, that reach extends farther than ever with a myriad of partnerships in over 36 nations. Our vision is to sustain and further a “global” Boğaziçi, where each member of its community not only discovers Turkey, but also the world. Boğaziçi University’s mission is to promote globalization by establishing new forms of academic cooperation with outstanding colleges and universities from around the world in order to increase the international experience of Boğaziçi students and faculty; maintaining an active portfolio of academic partners for its students and faculty; assisting the efforts of Boğaziçi’s academic units in forging new relationships with partner institutions; assisting outgoing Boğaziçi students in their selection, placement and registration at partner institution; assisting incoming Boğaziçi students by providing orientation services and coordinating their communication with the University’s academic and administrative units; representing the University at international
forums and in networks; facilitating the University’s international engagement, approach, and visibility with the aim of developing and strengthening relationships that bring further global distinction to the institution.
